Independent valuation expertise for shareholders, boards, and transactions. 30 years of seeing what others miss.
We work on both sides of the valuation equation: as independent experts where objectivity is paramount, and as embedded advisors helping companies position themselves for maximum shareholder value. For early-stage businesses where cash is scarce but potential is clear, we will consider sweat equity where it makes sense.
We help owners and boards understand what their business is worth, where value is being created or destroyed, and what strategic decisions will move the dial. This is not a compliance exercise — it is the analytical foundation for every material business decision.
When you are buying, selling, or restructuring, the quality of your valuation advice determines the outcome. We provide independent analysis of value drivers and risks so you negotiate from a position of knowledge, not hope.
Shareholder disputes, oppression claims, compulsory acquisitions — when the number has to stand up in court. We prepare independent expert reports and give evidence as expert witnesses, applying forensic rigour whether the audience is a judge, an arbitrator, or a board.
Purchase price allocations (AASB 3), share-based payments (AASB 2), impairment testing, intangible assets, and transfer pricing. Technical compliance work performed by people who understand the commercial context, not just the accounting standard.
Valuations for income tax purposes, taxable Australian real property, tax consolidation entry and exit, transfer pricing, and Division 7A. We work alongside tax advisors and auditors to deliver valuations that satisfy the ATO's expectations for methodology, documentation, and defensibility.
We sit on advisory boards bringing the shareholder value lens to strategic and operational decisions. This is not a consulting engagement with a start and end date — it is an ongoing commitment to helping the board see every decision through the lens of value creation, capital efficiency, and long-term shareholder return.
Advising ASX-listed companies, private enterprises, family businesses, funds, and boards — with cross-border engagements extending to the United States and United Kingdom.
We have particular expertise in valuing high-growth, pre-profit, and technology-driven businesses where traditional valuation methods fall short. Disruptors and startups present unique challenges — limited trading history, intangible-heavy balance sheets, uncertain cash flow profiles — that require experienced judgment, not formulaic approaches.
Three principles that define every engagement we undertake.
You work directly with Daniel van Aswegen and the engagement team throughout. We do not delegate to juniors, outsource analysis, or hand you a report written by someone you have never met. Thirty years of experience is only valuable if it is in the room.
Every valuation we produce answers the question that actually matters: what decisions should the shareholders make? We follow the principle that a valuation is a story expressed in numbers. If the story does not make commercial sense, the numbers are wrong — no matter how elegant the spreadsheet.
We integrate artificial intelligence into our analytical workflow — not as a novelty, but as a core tool for sector analysis, disruption assessment, and scenario modelling. Our proprietary AI Sector Disruption Indicator assesses how AI adoption affects risk premiums, value drivers, and strategic optionality across every engagement.
“The difference between a good valuation and a defensible one is whether the analyst understood the business before they opened the spreadsheet.”
Our name is derived from the Security Market Line — the graphical representation of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, which calculates the required rate of return on equity invested in a business. It reflects our philosophy: every business has a unique risk and return profile that determines its value. We use rigorous and objective methods to measure and communicate that value.
There are cheaper alternatives for simple valuations. We are not one of them. Market Line exists for the engagements where the answer is not obvious, the stakes are material, and the work product must withstand scrutiny from auditors, courts, boards, or counterparties. If the valuation question could be answered by a template and a multiple, you probably do not need us. If it cannot, you probably do.
Market Line is a boutique firm by design. Led by Daniel van Aswegen with over 30 years of valuation experience — including partnership roles at PwC Southern Africa and KPMG Australia — we operate from Brisbane and Melbourne, advising ASX-listed companies, private enterprises, family-owned businesses, funds, and boards across Australia, with cross-border engagements extending to the United States and United Kingdom.
We allocate senior resources to every engagement. You receive the benefit of decades of experience directly, not a junior analyst learning on your file. We bring a commercial and pragmatic approach to everything we do, communicate clearly, and deliver no surprises. We recognise that business owners do not want to relinquish the entrepreneurial spirit instilled by previous generations, and that the most important asset of any organisation is its people.
